How is the Alexander Technique taught? A typical lesson lasts 30 to 40 minutes. The teacher is able, through use of the hands, to release excess tension in the student and activate the body’s natural anti-gravity reflex. The student is then free to experiment with this new state of co-ordination through simple movements such as sitting or walking. Students are also taught how to send the right messages from the brain to the body to activate these reflexes. Part of the lesson usually includes “table work” with the student lying on their back while the teacher uses movements of the limbs to reinforce the new brain-body connections.
How many lessons would I need?
This depends on your reason for learning and your personal approach. Relief of pain can be almost immediate, but for long-lasting results a minimum of 25 to 30 lessons is suggested. The experience of Alexander Technique is new enough for most people that they need time in order to absorb the core principles necessary for independent progress. Many people decide to return for “refresher” lessons from time to time after an initial course of lessons.
